As music is a creative art, it must involve creativity. Just as art students produce their own drawings and paintings from the outset, so too music students should be encouraged to develop musical creativity from the earliest stages.
Too frequently, they are merely required to learn note for note, the compositions of others. This in art, is the equivalent of tracing.
In order for musicians to enjoy the creative gratification stemming from self expression, music study should include the cultivation of composition skills.
