Theory

Music theory involves an understanding of the conventions associated with reading and writing music notation. It offers musicians:

• the potential to accurately play the music of others, thereby enabling the development of repertoire, technical skills and musical competence
• the capability to transcribe one's own compositions, thus producing a written record and a means by which others may perform them
• the facility to study the scores of others, enabling stylistic understanding, and further development of musical literacy
